本书原为上世纪30年代日本学僧栂尾祥云所著,近年中国佛教文化研究所所长吴信如(吴立民)又对该书作了编辑,注释,并增加了图示.曼荼罗主要是指佛教在修行时所观想的境界,可以用立的坛城或平面的图画来表现.本书讲述了曼荼罗产生的根源和发展的历史,及其宗教的内涵.由于曼荼罗的制作主要依据的是"大日经"等密教经疏,本书对这些经疏的汉译本与藏译本,作了大量对比研究,有较高的学术价值.
